He argues that atheism and overly simplistic religious views fail to grapple with the complex realities of life. Real things, he asserts, are inherently complex and often counterintuitive. Christianity, he believes, acknowledges this complexity by addressing the existence of evil, sin, and the need for redemption.
Lewis explains that reality often defies our expectations, which is why simplistic views of God and religion are inadequate. My mother loved the works of George Macdonald, especially his children's novels. She also loved the writings of C S Lewis. She read English at Oxford and was fortunate enough to be taught by both Professor Lewis and Professor Tolkien during her time there in the 1940s. The rest of the story is that his friend, the barber, had been praying that Lewis would come visit so he could ask for help on some matter. Lewis then goes on to discuss why doing scientific studies on the effectiveness of prayer is not possible, because it does not work like magic spells that compel reality or God to change. It is communing with God. We may make requests, but it is His will be done, whether it's His active or passive will.
